HBCUAC Crossover

The HBCUAC starts another round of Crossover action today. The league boasts the NAIA’s top two rebounders in SUNO’s Jamal Gibson and Philander Smith’s Raymond Reece. Gibson, just a Sophomore, is on a terror as of late and it’s led SUNO to a 4-1 HBCUAC record. Their only losses since November 16th are a 10pt loss to D1 Northwestern State, an 8pt loss to a surging William Carey team (who we have on the IN line in our Bracketology Report) and then a 17pt loss to No. 21 Keiser. SUNO is currently tied for 1st, with Tougaloo, in the HBCUAC West. If they can get another Crossover sweep they will be sitting pretty heading into three tough road games. For Wilberforce, they come into this game on a 3-game losing streak. They sit in 2nd place in the HBCUAC East, 2 games behind Stillman. However, they may have the hardest 3-game Crossover set this weekend as they face SUNO, Dillard and Tougaloo. All 3 teams are 1st or 2nd in the HBCUAC West. Cali Davis has had some electric games for them this season! BIG weekend for him and Wilberforce!

Lewis-Clark State comes in at 10-2 on the season. Their only two losses are to Top 10 teams in No. 2 College of Idaho and at No. 6 Montana Tech on a buzzer beating 3. The C of I game, was the Warriors last game played, so they come into this game off of a loss. The Warriors have two Sensational Sophomores in Alton Hamilton and MaCarhy Morris, who lead them in scoring. Multnomah comes into this game with one of the best starts in program history at 9-2! Today though, is one of the Lions first true big tests of the season. That is not to take anything away from them. This is a Lions team who played 7 straight road games from November 22nd to December 21st. They also took their sister school, Jessup (CA) to a 1pt game in an exhibition in early November. Their two losses are by 2pts to Montana Western and by 12 at Corban. They two, are led by two Sensational Sophomores in Keilan Torkornoo and Marje Windfield. The CCC currently has 4 teams tied for 2nd place at 1-loss each. Big game for both teams as they try to stay within 1 game of 1st place!

Sterling currently sits in a tie for 5th place in the KCAC. They have wins over No. 24 OKWU and a road win vs Kansas Wesleyan. However, they stumbled a bit after those two wins as they lost two home games to Bethel (KS) and Ottawa (KS). They haven’t played since an exhibition loss to D2 Emporia State on December 17th. St. Mary (KS) sits in 1st place in the KCAC and comes into this game as winners of 8-straight. Including a tune up game two days ago vs Haskell. This is a bit of a trap game for them. They hit the road twice next week to face No. 24 OKWU and Bethel (KS). Two very tough places to win at, but the Spires can’t be looking ahead! This Sterling team, despite a bit of consistency, has the upset gene in them as they have shown already this season. The Spires also played that Haskell game without leading scorer, Damare Smith. So, we will see if he returns to the lineup this evening.

It’s still early for the NSAA, but these two teams are the current top teams in the NSAA. Both teams going on the road to pick up their NSAA wins. Dickinson State knocked off Jamestown, 81-77. While Mayville knocked off both Bellevue and Valley City State. Dickinson State ended Mayville States season last year, as they went into Lewy Lee Fieldhouse and knocked off Mayville in the NSAA Semifinals! The Blue Hawks are coming off of two tough losses to their future Frontier Conference foes as they lost to Providence and Rocky Mountain by a total of 4pts. That is kind of how Dickinson State goes, they are in EVERY game, but of their seven losses this season, the Blue Hawks have just one loss, to No. 2 College of Idaho, that was 10pts or more. Mayville comes in as winners of 9 of their last 10 games. That only loss? Well, it’s to No. 14 Morningside, in a game they played without NSAA Player of the Year, Darren Jones. Assuming he returns for this game, Jones should be super motivated in this one and looking for some revenge as Dickinson held him to just 2-11 from the field for 4pts in last year’s Semifinal loss.
