It’s the Monday before the last ever DI bracket reveal, so we thought we would do a bracketology report, on where we have things standing with just a few conference championship games left.
- The overall #1-seed belongs to Georgetown if they win the Mid-South Tournament. If they were to lose to Thomas More, for the 2nd time this season, then things would get interesting for who gets that #1 Overall seed. MACU would more than likely move into that #1 spot, but there is an argument for LSU-Shreveport to move into that spot as well. As far as Thomas More goes, with their win last night over Cumberlands (KY), they should slide ahead of them and into a Top 4-seed. The Mid-South Championship game is tonight at 8:00PM Central Time!
- Another game to watch is that Heart of America Championship game. William Penn still has a shot at sliding into a 1-seed here. Dalton State was ranked 4th in the last set of rankings and won the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Championship, BUT they did drop a game after the last set of rankings came out and opened the door for WPU to slide into a 1-seed with a Heart Tournament Championship tomorrow night. That will be no easy task though, as they face a tough Clarke squad who dealt William Penn their only home loss of the season. Clarke is a dangerous team, and will come ready to play tomorrow night. The game is scheduled for 7:00pm CT, on ESPN3.
- The “last 4 in-first 4 out” line is a difficult one. Stillman, is in, but outside of that, you have 7 teams for the final 3 spots. Park, was the co-regular season champs of the American Midwest Conference, so we gave them the nod. Wayland Baptist, had a bit of a weird year, but were Top 10 for a better part of the 1st semester. They also play in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and the SAC deserves to have 5 teams in. We put MSU-Northern into that final slot, because they have won 8 of their last 13 games. They also have two wins over Top 25 teams, and 11 of their 12 losses this season were by 11 or less points.
- A name that keeps popping up for an At-Large, so I will discuss, is Pikeville. I know that this is Kelly Wells last season, and I know that they have a similar record (20-11) to all of the other “Last 4 In” teams. BUT, here is the breakdown of their season. Of their 20 wins, only 8 of them are against NAIA DI teams, and only 10 of them are against NAIA programs. They are 7-11 this semester, and even though they beat a NCAA D2 program, they lost both games after that. I wouldn’t ever put it past a Kelly Wells coached team to win a game or two at the National Tournament, but I also don’t think they have the resume to get in. However, I am NOT a decision maker, so we will wait to see their fate on Wednesday.
